In 1944, the U.S. adopted the Bayonet-Knife M4 for use on the Caliber .30 M-1 Carbine. The M4 design would subsequently be adapted for use with the the M-1 Garand, M14, and M16 rifles; and used for the next 40 years, until superceded by the M9 bayonet in 1986. The M4 design was highly influential and was copied by many other nations for use with their own rifles. The picture below illustrates the Bayonet-Knife M4 fixed to the M-1 Carbine.
