Remington No. 5 Short Export Knife bayonet for use with the 7 mm. Remington No. 5 rolling block rifle.

While some collector references designate this bayonet as the M1899, I have seen no evidence that Remington or Mexico used this designation. Remington's model designation for the 7 mm. No. 5 rifles sold to Mexico in 1899-1900 was Model 1897.

Mexico purchased 14,712 7 mm. rolling block rifles and carbines in 1899–1900. 7,702 of these were rifles (carbines did not accept a bayonet). In 1900, Mexico specified a longer 13 3/16 in. (335 mm.) blade. These longer bayonets, unique to Mexico, were made by both Remington and Waffenfabrik Neuhausen in Switzerland.

Two scabbard types are encountered with this bayonet. The scabbard with this example, a leather body with steel mounts and a swiveling steel belt hook. The belt hook swivel on this example is missing the outside washer. Also encountered is a steel-bodied scabbard with integral leather belt hanger. A brass wire double hook adapter is sometimes found with the leather belt hanger.

Some believe that the circle-Z marking indicates production in the Czechoslovak Republic. However, the workmanship on these bayonets is not up to the standard of other Czechoslovak export production, so I tend to discount that. In all likelihood, these were made in Mexico.

It is not known how many were made. However, M1936 bayonets are scarce.
